OneTheBig Bang Theorystar revealed why they would be okay not returning to play the role they inhabited for 12 years for the spinoffStuart Fails to Save the Universe, or beyond. The latestspinoff in theTBBTuniverse,Stuart Fails to Save the Universeis being developed by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn for HBO Max.
Speaking toScreen Rant’s Grant Hermanns,Simon Helberg revealed that there are no plans for Howard Wolowitz to return in newTBBTspinoffs. Helberg mindfully explained why Howard not returning is good based on thecharacter’s development inBig Bang Theory, whose end gave closure to Howard’s story, something that could be upset by Howard returning. Read Helberg’s words below:

ScreenRant: Can we possibly look forward to seeing Howard come back? And whether or not you can say, what would you like to see from Howard if that opportunity were to arise?
“There’s no plan for Howard to come back at the moment. I don’t know, I like that we left those characters where we left them. They live on in the minds of people who want to have them in their minds, or maybe even people who don’t. [Chuckles] They just linger. But yeah, there’s something nice about closure to me, in some ways, because everything does tend to come back around these days, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But I don’t know where we would see him. I like that we kind of left at the peak of these guys. And that’s another great example of the arc of all those characters, it was so earned and so real. We had 12 years to do it, but it was great to see that kind of growth. And Howard’s arc was much, much, much, much bigger than like Sheldon’s, because Sheldon slowly, slowly, slowly changed. But anytime you can have a show where you watch the characters grow, it’s a joy. So, I don’t know how much more Howard is growing, but that’s in the mind of the audience, I guess.”

What Howard Not Returning Means For The Big Bang Theory Franchise
Revisiting Him In Stuart Fails & Beyond Could Crush Howard’s Development
Helberg centers the point of why bringing back Howard toStuart Fails to Save the Universeor any otherThe Big Bang Theoryspinoff could do the character a disservice. Indeed, the long timeThe Big Bang Theoryspent with the gang at the center of the story gave the sitcom the chance to focus on their lows and their highs.
Howard went from someone extremely creepy towards women to a family man truly devoted to his loved ones, withThe Big Bang Theoryeven examining his backstory with his dad and how it shaped Howard’s hopes and promises to his and Bernadette’s family. It would be difficult to bring him back without risking the happily-ever-after he got withTBBT’s ending.
Howard and the gang being at the center of every episode inThe Big Bang Theoryalso made it so that their stories have been thoroughly explored. DespiteStuart Fails to Save the Universebeing set after the parent series, making cameos even easier, the gang’s stories virtually ran out, especially if the characters appeared as they were inTBBT.
This leaves the thirdTBBTspinoff some freedom to inhabit the same world and hint at whatBig Bang Theoryestablished without damaging the characters.
The possibility ofStuart Fails to Save the Universebringing back alternate-universeTBBTcharacterswouldn’t fully count as revisiting them as we know them, as they could be unimaginably different in ways we cannot predict. This leaves the thirdTBBTspinoff some freedom to inhabit the same world and hint at whatBig Bang Theoryestablished without damaging the characters.
Our Take On Howard Not Returning To The TBBT Universe & How It Affects His Growth
Howard’s Absence Could Be An Intriguing Opportunity
Helberg’s perspective fully holds water, asThe Big Bang Theory’s long run really gave the gang the chance for their stories to be explored extensively. However, it rightfully couldn’t give Stuart, Denise, Bert and Barry Kripke the same attention. Not bringing back allTBBToriginal characters could thus work to establishStuart Fails to Save the Universe’s protagonistsas well.
WhileThe Big Bang Theoryand its first two spinoffs followed a network TV schedule and aired on CBS,Stuart Fails to Save the Universewill release on HBO Max.
With the developmentsThe Big Bang Theory’s protagonists went through that let their stories end in the best way possible for almost all characters, it would make sense to revisitTBBTby rewatching it if one were to miss the characters. This letsStuart Fails to Save the Universedo something different within the same world, without risking ruining them.
