In theory, Thor possesses the raw power to kill Godzilla, but the kaiju’s infusion with the Necrosword completely changes the game. Thanks to the Necrosword, Godzilla has become a cosmic threat capable of slaying gods. Asgard is gone, so the best course of action is to minimize collateral damage in other realms. Hence, trapping Godzilla and himself in Hel forever is a logical strategy for this version of Thor.

It’s rather odd that none of the Avengers or other heroes intervene in Thor’s battle with the King of the Monsters. Dozens of heroes and even villains have participated inprevious Marvel Comics appearances by Godzilla, after all. Regardless, Thor’s sacrifice shows how Earth and the Nine Realms are safe, even if the God of Thunder is the last superhero standing.

Thor’s Eternal Fight With Godzilla Is One Of His Biggest Feats Of Power

Thor’s Fate Is Darker Than His Prime & MCU Counterparts

Throughout the ages, Thor has lifted the Midgard Serpent, shattered entire planets with Mjolnir, and wrestled cosmic beings likethe Elder God Toranosand Gorr the God Butcher. In the MCU, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor survived the full force of a neutron star and nearly killed Thanos singlehandedly with Stormbreaker. Yet,none of Thor’s past feats involved the same combination of raw power and eternal endurance as choosing to contain Godzilla’s rampage in the land of the dead forever.

In dooming himself to fight Godzilla forever, Thor also mirrors other mythical figures like Prometheus, who’s perpetually eaten by an eagle for helping humanity; and Sisyphus, who’s condemned to lift a rock forever for defying the gods. In at least one universe,Thorhas become an eternal guardian willing to endure unending war for the good of the cosmos. Compared to other feats, it’s not the loudest, but certainly one of the most meaningful.
