Queen Azshara’s Wondrous Reign

Before theGreat Sundering reshapedWorld of Warcraft’s Azerothforever, Queen Azshara was born. She was often considered one of the most beautiful night elves around and possessed magical abilities more powerful than any before her. She also had an immense fascination with the Well of Eternity and would use her power as queen to uncover its secrets. Her reign was a prosperous one, and she quickly became one of the most beloved monarchs in night elf history.

World of Warcraft’snight elveswould soon discover that they had the ability to actually manipulate the cosmic energies of the Well of Eternity. Since Queen Azshara was the most powerful, she took it upon herself to learn how to wield this power. She gained control over the energy and would infuse her powerful scepter with a drop of its waters. This gave her control over the seas and the creatures that called it home. However, as the obsession with the Well grew, the Highborne became reckless, and the Well became more turbulent.

With this power, the Kaldorei empire would head out into the world to discover new lands and expand their borders. Queen Azshara would oversee this expansion, and she would use her scepter to create massive lakes filled with exotic creatures. Night elves would come from far and wide to see Queen Azshara’s spectacle, and to study all that the Kaldorei empire had created. While this love and power were great, it was simply not enough for Queen Azshara.

The Queen’s Descent Into Evil

Everything seemed to be working for the Kaldorei empire until Queen Azshara’s most trusted advisor approached her. He wanted to use the power of the Well of Eternity to cleanse the world and make it perfect. Together, they began to meddle even further with the Well to accomplish this. However, this meddling quickly drew the attention ofWarcraft’s dark titan Sargeras. He quickly got to work manipulating the Highborne, and tricking Queen Azshara into making a portal for him on Azeroth.

The Burning Legion would invade Azerothvia this portal, and the War of the Ancients would begin. With Queen Azshara at their side, the Legion cut through the forces of Azeroth, razed cities like Zin-Azshari and Suramar, and rained down destruction on the planet. The people would scream for Azshara’s help, but she would ignore their pleas in pursuit of her perfect world. However, the will of Azeroth would prove far stronger than she realized.

World of Warcraft’s Malfurion Stormrage, Illidan Stormrage, and Tyrande Whisperwind would lead a resistance against Queen Azshara and the Burning Legion. They would successfully destroy the portal, stop the Legion’s plan, and the Well of Eternity would collapse in on itself. The Great Sundering of Azeroth would begin, and nothing would be the same again.

The Naga Queen’s Rise to Power

As the oceans roared, Queen Azshara realized that Sargeras would not be coming to her people’s aid. So, she raised her scepter high in the sky and created a massive shield to protect them from the crashing waves. However, the waters would still swallow them up. They struggled to breathe the limited air, and she was unable to grant them the ability to breathe underwater. Death seemed almost certain untilWorld of Warcarft’s old god fish approached her.

N’zoth would begin to whisper to her through the fish as the ocean destroyed everything. It would show her visions of the powerful Black Empire at their height, and tell her to simply let go. It offered to save her in exchange for becoming a servant, but Azshara would never serve. Instead, she convinced N’zoth that she would rule at its side as a queen. Reluctantly, the old god agreed and turned her people intoWarcraft’s naga.

The naga would quickly get to work building a brand-new empire under the ocean. Their capital city would be known asNazjatar inWorld of Warcraft, and Queen Azshara’s hate would turn her into a monster. This new empire would expand throughout the ocean, fill its ranks with powerful beings, and serve as servants to N’zoth. Throughout it all, Queen Azshara saw a future where her new empire ruled all of Azeroth.

Queen Azshara and her naga would make small appearances throughoutWorld of Warcraft, but players would see the full force of her power in Legion and Battle for Azeroth. Legion showed players the devastation she inflicted on Aszuna and other parts of the Broken Isles, whileWorld of Warcraft’s Battle for Azerothsaw the heroes of Azeroth plunge into the murky depths of Nazjatar. It was there that players faced off against the bulk of the naga empire, and came face-to-face with Queen Azshara herself.

The last time players saw Queen Azshara was when they attackedNy’alotha, the Waking Cityat the end of Battle for Azeroth. After releasing N’zoth from his prison, she was brought before it and tortured by one of his servants. Once players defeated N’zoth, Queen Azshara would open a void portal to claim the true throne of power for herself. She would walk through it, and vanish without another word. No one knows her current whereabouts, but her return will likely bring even more devastation for the people of Azeroth.
